ARTS ORGANIZATIONS
The following groups are exclusive to scholars who specialize in their respective fields:
MAKILING DANCE
Makiling Dance is the performing group of the senior high school dance majors at the Philippine High School for the Arts (PHSA). Since its foundation in 2016, Makiling Dance has pursued its mission to produce well-rounded, critically-minded dance artists and cultural leaders whose works are infused with Filipino sensibilities. Aside from providing training to develop technically proficient and versatile dancers, makiling dance offers an artistic and experimental platform for its members to create, research, choreograph, and collaborate with other artists. They perform and create in classical ballet, Philippine folk dance, modern dance, and contemporary dances.
In September 2024, Makiling Dance participated in the Sibu International Dance Festival, where it had five performances in the world fiesta and international dance concerts. In November 2024, MD had the unique privilege of performing in the world premiere of Moy Ortiz’s mass pop at the Pinoy Pop Music Festival in Bonifacio Global City, Metro Manila.
Makiling dance has performed at the Ho Chi Minh-Gyeongju World gyeongju Expo 2017 in Vietnam; Pasinaya at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) in 2017, 2018, & 2019; Ncca’s National Arts Month in 2018 & 2019; CCP’s Neo-Filipino in 2017 & 2019; and Ncca’s International Dance Exchange 2019 in Roxas City.
The group also participated in the CCP Summer Arts Academy 2019 and in the International Friendship Day fiesta in Singapore in May 2019.
Makiling Dance has conducted workshops and engaged in culture-sharing projects in Sigma, Capiz (2019), Calaca, Batangas (2021), Puerto Princesa (2024), and the Tagbanua community in Palawan (2024). Md also conducted two workshops—traditional Filipino dance and contemporary Filipino dance—during this sibu international dance festival in Malaysia in September 2024.

DULAANG SIPAT LAWIN (DSL)
Dulaang Sipat Lawin (DSL) is the resident theater group of the Philippine High School for the Arts – the first and premiere art school of the country. It was established in 1977 in the picturesque Mount Makiling in the Province of Laguna (about 1.5 hours’ drive from the capital of Manila).
The theater group’s name depicts the mountain’s freely roaming hawks, whose broad range of sight reflects the company’s vision of aesthetics, awareness, development, and social engagement that leads to a fuller sense of artistic creativity, freedom, and responsibility. Dulaang Sipat Lawin’s repertoire, which includes original Filipino works, adaptations of classics, and devised performances, has been performed in local and international theater festivals.
The students, who come from different parts of the Philippines, are trained in Acting, Directing, Improvisation, Musical Theater, Stage and Production Management, and Theatre Theories in Junior High. In furthering their studies, they undergo introductory courses in Research in the Arts, such as Dramaturgy, Performance Studies, Playwriting, Devising, and Work Immersion in their Senior High School years.

The company aims to produce excellent classical and modern ballet performers, choreographers, and cultural leaders of the country. MB has dedicated itself to research-based choreographies and productions to help conserve our vanishing tradition and folkways in dance and to underscore the role of a carefully planned dance education in national economic development.
MB has done numerous outreach performances in Manila, Laguna, Baguio, Mindoro, Pangasinan, Bicol, Davao, Bacolod, Batangas, Nueva Ecija, Silay, Leyte, Bohol, Cebu, Midsayap, and General Santos City. The troupe has also been invited to perform and compete in countries like Brunei, Monaco, Belgium, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, and Singapore.
Thirty-nine years (39) since its inception, the organization has produced over 100 alumni, most of whom have made their mark as choreographers, artistic directors, ballet masters, art managers, and performers in various dance companies, schools, and universities locally and internationally.

The Sanghiyas Pangkat Mananayaw (SPM) is the resident Folk Dance Troupe of the Philippine High School for the Arts (PHSA), a government-run secondary school for the Filipino youth who are gifted in the arts.
“Sanghiyas” literally means “one gem”. With a mission of preserving, promoting and propagating Philippine culture and the arts, the Sanghiyas Pangkat Mananayaw performs a repertoire of folk dances from across the country. The troupe’s primary vision is to provide its young folk dance students with the necessary skills, training and discipline needed to make them equipped and empowered dance artists.
